Catalyst Theater Company

Vision & History

Who we are, where we've been, and where we're going.

Our Vision

Catalyst Theater Company believes great theater can transform a room, inspire conversation, build community, and remind us of our shared humanity.

Our vision is to establish Catalyst as a permanent professional theater in Plainfield, New Jersey—a home where exceptional artists, emerging talent, and our community come together to create ambitious, imaginative, and emotionally powerful work.

That home is urgently needed. Without a dedicated space, each production requires Catalyst to rebuild its infrastructure from the ground up, limiting performances, employment opportunities, programs, and audiences. A permanent home would give Catalyst the stability to serve Plainfield throughout the year.

We envision a theater that belongs to Plainfield while reaching audiences across New Jersey and the greater New York metropolitan region. We will produce work that is bold, visually compelling, diverse, challenging, joyful, and unexpected—productions audiences remember long after they leave and that spark conversation throughout the community.

At the heart of this vision is an adaptable performance and creative space for a full season of professional theater, new work, educational programming, artist development, community events, and collaboration. It would be a place where scenery is built, actors rehearse, designers experiment, young artists learn, and audiences gather—allowing ideas to grow from first spark to opening night.

A permanent home would expand Catalyst's artistic possibilities, enabling longer-term planning, more ambitious productions, longer runs, and meaningful pathways for emerging artists and theater professionals. It would also allow us to invest in the people, tools, and relationships that make excellent theater possible.

Plainfield deserves a thriving professional theater company of its own, and Catalyst intends to become an enduring part of the city's cultural identity. A permanent theater would strengthen the city's cultural and economic vitality, draw regional visitors, create opportunities for local participation, and provide a consistent gathering place where residents connect through shared artistic experiences.

Our History

Catalyst Theater Company began with an idea and a leap of faith.

In 2019, professional scenic designer and theater artist David Boyd set out to produce Saucy Jack and the Space Vixens, sparking the creation of a professional theater company rooted in Plainfield.

The company began building its organization and community, but the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted that early momentum. Catalyst endured.

In 2022, the company finally brought Saucy Jack and the Space Vixens to the stage. The production played to sold-out audiences and launched Catalyst's continuing mainstage work in Plainfield.

Since then, Catalyst has grown artistically and organizationally, producing an intentionally varied repertoire that includes Elling, Bat Boy: The Musical, Legacy of Light, and The Fabulous Lounge Swingers, while bringing together professional artists, local talent, designers, technicians, volunteers, donors, and audiences.

Catalyst is now a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit and a member of the New Jersey Theatre Alliance, strengthening its place in New Jersey's professional theater community.

But Catalyst's history is still being written.

Our next chapter is about permanence—and the need to act now. After years of proving what Catalyst can create, we are working to establish a permanent theatrical home in Plainfield. Our current model has enabled meaningful work, but it cannot sustain the future we envision. Temporary venues bring recurring costs, logistical challenges, scheduling limits, and barriers to artistic growth. A permanent home would turn that uncertainty into stability, allowing Catalyst to serve the community with greater consistency, reach, and impact.

It would enable more performances, expanded educational and community programming, more employment for artists, and the long-term relationships essential to a healthy cultural institution.

We don't simply want to present shows in Plainfield. We want to build a theater that Plainfield can call its own.

A theater that creates sustained opportunities for artists. A theater that gives emerging talent room to grow. A theater that strengthens our city's cultural and economic vitality. A theater that welcomes audiences from throughout the region. A theater that gives young people meaningful access to creativity, collaboration, and professional theater. A theater that takes artistic risks. A theater that celebrates our differences and common humanity. A theater that gives people a place to gather, imagine, and belong. A theater built to last.

Catalyst was created because we believed something extraordinary could grow here. The response from artists, audiences, volunteers, donors, and community members has shown us that it can. Now we must turn that promise into a lasting institution—one that sustains the work, deepens its impact, and remains vital to Plainfield for generations to come.

We still believe. And this is only the beginning.

Help us build the theater Plainfield deserves.
